At present, the Beijing administration believes that AI technologies are national resources that must be kept under strict control. The new approach demonstrates that there will be fewer opportunities for Chinese AI models to enter the international market in the near future.
High-Level Government Consultations with Major Companies
Sources claim that the government holds consultations with some of the country’s leading companies in the sphere, such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and Z.ai, about ways to prevent access to their proprietary AI models. The initiative comes after an intensive development of Chinese companies internationally.
The developed AI models have managed to prove themselves as powerful and lower-cost substitutes for international models recently. For example, the DeepSeek R1 AI model released recently provides tough competition to the international ChatGPT by OpenAI and Gemini by Google.
